TAKE TEN: Our interview with Bestselling author Andrew M. Greeley

When it comes to discussing international bestselling authors today, it is impossible not to include Father Andrew M. Greeley. He has produced over 50 bestselling novels over the past few decades, and I have had the pleasure to read and enjoy 15 of them myself. His tales of the lives of those who devote themselves to the service of the church have sparked dialogue and controversy almost from the beginning of his career. But there has been a positive side to his career and success as well. When talking about Greeley, Reverend Ron Rolheiser said this: "Nobody has ever left the church because of an Andrew Greeley novel, but many have been attracted back to it by him." Why is that, you might ask. Read this exclusive interview to find out.--- Cyrus A. Webb, Conversations Book Club
Father Greeley, we appreciate your taking out the time to talk with TAKE TEN today. Having enjoyed numerous bestselling novels and praise from around the world for the stories you create, do you see your writing career as an extension of your ministry?
Not so much an extension as an essential part of my ministry.

When did you know that you were such a gifted storyteller? Did you come from a family of readers?
I don't know that I'm a gifted story teller. I must leave that to others like yourself to judge. Both my parents read and both like to tell stories.

I have been curious for sometime about was there any one individual along your literary journey that inspired you to write and then seek to be published. Can you share with us what led to your submitting your first written work?
The late Bernard Geiss, a "packager" of novels, urged me to write a story about two young men who grew up to be priests. The Cardinal Sins emerged from that suggestion.

EXCLUSIVE: Conversations talks with author Martha Tucker

She is one of many authors who have made the decision not to let the literary industry dictate the kind of writer she would be. With a life that embodies the arts, author Martha "Marti" Tucker walks to the beat of her own drum, and the result is her novel THE MAYOR'S WIFE WORE SAPPHIRES. So what sets her apart from others that have written a book and wanted to find success? What motivates her to pursue this seriously and not just for the fame? Martha tells you that and more in this exclusive conversation.Martha, thank you for taking out the time to talk with Conversations. For those who might not be familiar with you or your work, please give them a brief description.
My work is revealing the myriad of positive African American images that hardly anyone sees. I'm a firm believer that what we see is what we "be-come."

So for future generations of all races, I work to reveal the more realistic image of African Americans, those Black people who are not the dealers, sex fiends, entertainers and sports figures you always see in the media. Yes, we are those things, but we're a whole lot more.

I mentioned in my introduction that your life embodies the arts. Tell our readers where that love came from.
I believe that God created every human being for a purpose, to carry out an assignment He needed to be done. Now, no one in my family was artistic, so how did it happen? Well, God must have needed someone to bring the beauty, brilliance and resilience of African American people to the forefront. And that someone was me. So He gave me a love for the arts, groomed me to become a writer. He took a little nobody like me and taught me to know the difference between reality and appearances. I have sense enough to know there are fabulous African Americans in every arena you can think of, but we no one shows them to us, so to most they don't exist. I wrote a female Barack Obama type before I knew he existed. I gave my character some of the same political issues he has, because it expanded the image of our people to be bigger than our image, give us hope, and a belief in "yes, I can."

Mississippi hiphop artist uses car dealership to support literacy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MS Hiphop artist uses car dealership to support literacy

Contact: Carlos “Jokah the General” Sims, recording artist/owner

Cyrus A. Webb, President/Founder,

Conversations Book Club & Hiphop and Books Literacy campaign

cawebb4@juno.com

When Cyrus A. Webb,33, began Conversations Book Club in November 2006, it was with three members meeting once a week at the Medgar Evers Library in Jackson, MS. The meetings were open to everyone free of charge and those in attendance were able to either talk with authors each week on the phone or in person. Webb hoped that the interaction with the author would encourage those in attendance to want to read the book and then share what they had read with others.

Now in August 2008 Conversations Book Club is one of the most celebrated book club in the country, with seven chapters in Mississippi, one in Louisiana, another in Tennessee and meetings being held in Atlanta, Chicago, Little Rock and Baltimore. Not only did the word spread about that Webb was doing to encourage reading, but authors from all over the country joined with him—adding not only credibility but results to his literacy campaign.

There have been some challenges to the work that Webb had done, yet few would know it by looking at the results. One of the biggest hurdles has been that he has done all of this building without his own vehicle. “I never gave much thought to it really,” says Webb, “because things always seemed to work out. I would pay individuals to take us where we needed to go or I would be in a position to rent a vehicle to get from point A to point B. There have been times, though, that events would have to be rescheduled because I had no transportation.”

Beginning in September 2008, however, this will no longer be an issue. Next of Kindredz Automotives, a new car dealership in Jackson (MS), has agreed to donate a vehicle to help support the work that Webb is doing. Carlos “Jokah the General” Sims (seen above) has known Webb for over four years, and currently is being managed by him. Sims is also part of the Hiphop and Books coalition that Webb formed to encourage reading among music lovers. His group's song "Welcome 2 Da Jack" is featured online at http://www.hiphopandbooks.com as well as on the compilation cd produced by the organization. When he saw that there was a way he could help outside the music, he jumped at the opportunity.

“Cyrus does so much out of his own pocket to help others when it comes to reading and promoting the arts that I was glad to give something to him,” say Sims, 30. “Next of Kindredz is to help the people, and helping begins with family. He is like family to me, and I know this will help to keep his mission going.”

To date, Conversations Book Club has hosted more authors than any other book club in the country, over 50 to date! The group was recognized in February 2008 during a ceremony in New Jersey for its commitment to literacy, and Webb has been featured on BET and endorsed by recording artists such as C-Murder, Jon Boy (VH1’s The White Rapper Show), Universal recording artist Josh Gates and others.

20,000 hits and counting: Conversations Book Club says Thank You!

Hello, I am Cyrus A. Webb, President and Founder of Conversations Book
Club, and I want to take this opportunity to say Thank You to everyone
for your support.

When Conversations Book Club was formed in November 2006, it was with the
idea of bringing readers and authors together to discuss what they all
love: books! This was a goal I looked forward to because I was a lover of
books myself. At the time I was already writing book reviews and
interviewing authors for various publications so I had a ready arsenal to
start with in making the book club a success.

Since then we have hosted events in several states, formed partnerships
with organizations that now welcome authors and gives new authors the
same opportunities as more seasoned ones. Alot of work has gone into what
Conversations has done, and in the past I have been reluctant to reveal
all of the details about how Conversations has been able to accomplish
what it has. I think it is time, though, that you are given a look
inside.

The driving force behind Conversations has been me, the founder. We have
members "in spirit" because none of those who attend our events pay dues.
I am the one that arranges the schedules of authors. I am the one who
secures transportation for the authors. I am the one in most situations
that secures housing for the authors when they come to town---and I do
all of this for FREE. That's right, the authors pay nothing for this
service, nor or they asked to. There is no grant or salary given to me
for any of the things that I do with the book club. So why do I give up
so much of my time and money for something that I don't directly benefit
from? Again, I am a book lover and by connection a lover of authors who
give us great books. Since November 2006, I have given my all in order
for readers to have an opportunity to meet and greet with authors from
all over the country---and I don't regret any of it.

There are some things, however, that I do regret when it comes to dealing
with people---something that we all encounter from time to time, and that
is lack of appreciation. I have seen it come from other book clubs, even
though all of our events are open to the public, and I have seen it from
authors as well. Now, there was time when things that people say about
work I do or me personally would have shut me down; but I am here to tell
you that those days are long gone. The results of what Conversations has
done in less than 2 years can't be denied. We have hosted more authors
than any other book club (59 to date), had more conference call
discussions than any other book club, made it possible for authors that
were only known in certain circles to sit next to bestselling authors in
Wal-Mart, and we have made it clear that our organization is designed for
all: black, white, young and old. We are truly made for the people.

Days ago our main website http://www.thebesbookclub.info crossed the
20,000 hits mark and over the weekend that number continued to grow.
I have another 26 authors that I will be working with in person this
year, over double that number who will be guests on my online radio show
and 11 authors already booked for 2009.

The point? Regardless of what you hear, no matter what others say,
Conversations has made its mark and will continued to do so. The proof is
in the pudding. As for those who flaunder around us, just remember that
as in most groups the good always rises to the top. Those who were in it
for themselves will be weeded out. The readers and authors in the
literary game may change, but the game remains the same and goes on.

Again, thank you again for your continued support. This journey has been
one of experiences I will never forget---and it is only just beginning.

Enjoy your day. Enjoy your life. Enjoy your world. Enjoy BOOKS!

TAKE TEN: Our Conversation with Author Sam Love

Author Sam Love came to the attention of Conversations in early 2008 and has kept our attention every since. The 61 year old native of Aliceville, Alabama has taken his love of the 60s and brought readers an enjoyable, unforgettable tale in the book ELECTRIC HONEY.
(Conversations Reviewed this book for the Clarion Ledger newspaper in July 2008. Read the review here: http://www.rankinledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080712/LIFE/807120311/1003)
Though written years ago, the message and social issues it addresses are beneficial for every generation as you will see in this interview.
• Sam, Thank you for taking out the time to talk with Conversations. Before we get into your book ELECTRIC HONEY, I want to talk about your desire to write. Where did it come from? Is it something you always knew you wanted to do?
Thank you for the work you do promoting books. I've often wondered why I have a desire to write. Something inside me keeps pushing me. I am a mix of Scott and Irish and they have a great tradition of story telling. I have a feeling it is one of those genetic problems medical science can't cure.

• I am always curious as to what authors enjoy reading and how much it coincides with the time period they write about. What about you? If I was to visit you at home, what would I find on your bookshelves?
I have always enjoyed the off beat. I loved "Gods in Alabama" for example or any of the books by Carl Hiaasen and Jodi Picoult. I just finished "The Diamond Cutter" about a Buddhist monk who goes to work in the diamond district in New York. I am also reading books now about the psychology of the workplace as research for another writing project.
• ELECTRIC HONEY takes us through several generations, however, the main story takes place in the sixties. What was it about that time that drew you to it?
I lived through the sixties and some of my friends didn't. I also feel we are living in a culture where memory is disappearing. We are overloaded with noise and information and our brains are forced to shed anything they don't need to function. I reference this in the Disclaimer in the front of "Electric Honey": "Much of this story relied upon my memory of Mississippi in the 1960's and since memory is disappearing from our culture, the story has all the accuracy of a fairy tale." I have thought about making a bumper sticker that says, "Remember Memory".

I do think the sixties was a period that many people want to forget. Parents are not proud of some of the things they did. The conservatives have also attacked some of the alternative values young people explored during that time. The peace, women's, and civil rights movements all opened up a Pandora's box of questions about a white male dominated, materialistic and militaristic society. It led to clashes in the culture that are still happening. I heard a debate last night on TV about the role of alpha males in corporations. Much of this discussion I first heard 40 years ago. I even have a section in "Electric Honey" that describes a meeting where the women break off into a "consciousness raising" session on "sister power". They discuss the role of women in the meeting and return to the main group with a list of demands. As they start listing their demands, some Neanderthals drive by in a pickup and fire a shotgun blast into the meeting. As odd as this seems today, it happened and I was there when the building got shot up in Mississippi. For years too many people voted with their shot guns in the state.

Author Sam Love and his interview about ELECTRIC HONEY will be featured during the entire month of September 2008 as part of Conversations alliance with http://www.books2mention.com.
