POEM: History 2009 by C. A. Webb

History 2009

 

I woke up this morning with history on my mind.

Though it's only January 20, 2009 this year has already proven to be like no other.

The country in which I live fulfilled another aspect of its greatness today with the swearing in of its 44^th President, our first black President.

But there is more.

It comes only one day after the nation celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

and the message of his life along with his famous dream.

That's part of why I woke up this morning with history on my mind.

The election of President Barack Obama to the White House is just another facet of the dream held by not just Dr. King but so many

others who believed in this country's ability to learn, to lead and to love.

But there is still much more to do.

Dreams come true when you not only believe but work in harmony with those beliefs.

It's fine to put hope in other's ability, but that hope must be planted in the work that other's see that we are willing to do ourselves.

There has been much talk of change, and that change can come if we are willing to rearrange the way we live our lives

so that it is seen in not just one man but us as one nation.

Real change will lead us to treat our fellow man in a way that shows we believe that no life is greater than another

—we will treat each other as sisters and brothers.

Real change will inspire us to seek ways we can encourage others to be their best instead of standing by and

letting our fellow citizens in the world fail like the rest.

If we want real change we won't accept just anything. Just getting by will not do. Not now. Not anymore. Not for anyone.

History is on my mind because we are all part of it, creating it, learning from it and living it.

Though not all our history has been the best of us, I know that what we leave behind beginning with this day will outlive the rest of us.

Others will look back on this day and marvel at the hope created

and through our actions we will be able to say that we appreciate our part in history.

We welcome it, because in the chapters we will add there will be pride that we are now being the people we want others to think we are.

And our best is yet to come.

The Write Stuff Auditions in Atlanta, GA: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

On Friday, January 16, 2009 supporters of The Write Stuff reality show converged on Atlanta, GA for the beginning of the weekends events. First was the meet and greet that allowed those interested in the project to meet the judges as well as get to know more about what the show hoped to accomplish.

Many of the judges met for the first time and were able to get to know each other better.

On Saturday, January 17, 2009 the auditions for The Write Stuff were held in Atlanta, GA.

Out of the pack came the following contenders:
CONFIRMED FOR SEASON ONE: Dr. M. F. (Atlanta, GA)

CONFIRMED FOR SEASON ONE: David Dickson (Newton, NC)

CONFIRMED FOR SEASON ONE: Carla Strozier (College Park, GA)

CONFIRMED FOR SEASON ONE: Darrell Bruner (Atlanta, GA)

Two contestants showed great promise and much go through another challenge to see if they will be eligible for Season One of The Write Stuff (see below):

Monique Williams (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

Aside from the auditions, The Write Stuff also collected over $200 in books that will be donated to a local library or organization in the Atlanta area. The presentation will be done on behalf of The Write Stuff by author/judge Diane Dorce'.

The Write Stuff Report: Houston, TX Meet & Greet/Auditions 2009

The historic nature of The Write Stuff reached a new level on Friday, January 9 2009 when some of the principals with the project converged on Houston, Texas for the first meet and greet and audition. No one knew exactly what to expect, but at the end of the day it was agreed that the events were a success!

During the meet and greet dozens attended to find out more about the project, meet the judges and other participants and just to show their support. Among the judges present were (seen below) authors Sylvia Dickey Smith, Kia Stokes, Brian W. Smith, P. Elaine Archie, Elaine Flowers and Joseph Henderson. It was the first time many of them had actually met in person, but you wouldn't have been able to tell by the conversations and the instant connections that were made.

The day of the auditions (Saturday, January 10, 2009) the lines weren't long, however, contestants came from Lake Charles, Louisiana to Orange County, Texas ready to show why they had The Write Stuff.

At the end of the day three contestants were confirmed for the show:

Shanedria Ridley

Geremy Howard

Another contestant, Lakeisha Young-Sanders (seen below), showed great promise and will be involved in another activity to see if she will be chosen to be a part of season one.
Aside from the actual activites of the weekend, The Write Stuff supporters were able to give back to others as well. Dozens of books were brought in as donations, totally over $450! These will be presented by author Sylvia Dickey Smith to the Georgetown Public Library in Georgetown, Texas.

After dreaming about being an author since she was nine years old, Mississippi native Roishina Clay Henderson is now living that dream to the fullest. Her first novel Make Me Whole debuted in December 2008 and is already getting rave reviews. A former journalist with The Clarion-Ledger, she now lives in Atlanta, Ga., with her husband and son. Henderson talked with Conversations Book Club President Cyrus A. Webb about her book, the experience of being published and her advice for others who wish to do the same.

In 2009 many new literary voices will be joining the growing coalition of published authors. One such individual is Patricia Neely-Dorsey. Her book Refections of a Mississippi Magnolia was released in 2008 to glowing reviews, and she will be spending her time getting it out to the world in the coming months while writing on her next project. Patricia took out time recently to talk with Conversations about her beginnings as a writer, the book and what keeps her going. Here is our conversation.

Happy New Year to you, Patricia, and thank you for taking out time to participate in Conversations' "Take Ten". Before we talk about your book Reflections of A Mississippi Magnolia I want you to talk about you. How would you describe yourself and your evolution over the years?
Happy New Year to you, Cyrus, and Thank You for this wonderful opportunity to share with you about my book. In answer to your question, I would say that I have always thought of myself as very interesting and unique. On all of the questionnaires that I ever filled out since I was in grade school, I always described myself as that. Everyone also tells me that I am very funny.. so I guess I am that , too. People are always commenting on how funny some of my poems are. Evolution? Although ,I felt that I really knew myself inside and out and that everything was pretty much set with me, I think a real evolution began in me and with me when I turned 40. All of a sudden, it seemed that I just had all of these new revelations about myself and the world around me. It was like a new lease on life. The forties have truly been fabulous. and very eye-opening thus far. I feel that I know myself so much better and that I am so much more comfortable in the skin I'm in.

Growing up, I believe everyone has a dream about what they see themselves doing. For you how would were you answering the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
As far as what I dreamed of and wanted to be when I grew up , I never really had a realistic, concrete idea of that. In grade school, my idol was Beverly Johnson, one of the first black "supermodels", so naturally I wanted to be a supermodel …but being 5'6 (not quite tall enough) and living in Tupelo, MS. I started to realize that probably wouldn't happen ...But, then again, Elvis Presley came from Tupelo…so anything is possible (LOL). Obama validated that for all of us.
